One moment the USS Nimitz is
sailing along near pearl harbour, next moment
the mighty ship is caught in a space-time vortex and carried back in time
to the date just before the Japanese attack on pearl harbour.
As the crew struggle to work out what has happened to them, they
discover that they have a unique opportunity – they can sink the
Japanese fleet before they attack pearl.
Featuring
Kirk Douglas as Captain Yellman and Martin Sheen as Mr. Laskey, the film
is released on both DVD and Video.

While doing work experience in
Oldham, I was lucky enough to be able to purchase a copy of this movie
while shopping for lunch. Having
heard a lot about it, I sat in front of my computer – and I was not
disappointed. The
effects look a little dated, and part of the back story is never
discussed, but don’t let that bother you.
Parts of the film are awesome, as
Japanese Zeros dogfight with F-15 Tomcats, the Tomcats out-flying the
Zeros with ease. The US
senator response to Yellman “who are
you people” is characterisation at its best.
There are some moments of light
humour; at the demands of the rescued senator, Yellman allows him to
contact Pearl Harbour, but he is brushed off by the communications officer
at pearl, who insists – quite rightly – that there is no such ships as
the USS Nimitz and no such person as Captain Yellman.
Dan Thurman, the executive officer, when pressing the case for
immediate interference, “This is a US ship, will be, was, oh I can’t
get my head round it”.
There is the usual time paradox, as
always seems to appear in films of this nature, when the mysterious Mr.
Tideman, Laskey’s boss, is revealed to be none other than a Nimitz
crew member who got stranded on Pearl Harbour.
Overall,
a great film, and well worth an AH essay or two. |
