Every day I hear about another paper closing, another TV station off the air, another city being abandoned. From the March 4th, 1968 edition of The Australian: GOVT. DENIES BROOME QUARANTINE SEAL BROKENFrom the March 5th, 1968 Rand Daily Mail: More than four years have passed since the RDS plague began to destroy our world, and there are few if any signs that the pandemic is anywhere close to being finished with its lethal course. Though the global rate of infection has at last begun to slow down, it may have come too late for the long-term survival of the human race or even any short- term hope of recovery; some 2.7 billion people have died from the disease itself and untold millions more have been killed in the unrest and chaos the pandemic has brought about. Even the largest countries cannot sustain such casualties for long… One weeps to think of the great cities that now lie deserted as a consequence of the tragedy that has befallen humanity. In New York, the Statue of Liberty’s torch is extinguished, possibly forever; in Moscow, the microscopic RDS germ has succeeded where the vast legions of Napoleon and Hitler failed; in London, Big Ben tolls no more; even the Suez Canal lies empty, its channels a vast iron and concrete tomb in which the coffin of global commerce lies buried…One wonders how much longer it will be before our own hospitals start becoming crowded with victims of this relentless virus....
From the diary of a University of North Dakota medical student, entry dated March 10th, 1968: The good news is the worldwide infection rate for the Morgan’s virus seems to be finally slowing down…the bad news is we still haven’t found a cure for the sucker. And the way things are going in the rest of the world, it may be a moot point anyway; I just read in the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader, which is practically the only paper that’s still able to print in this country, that the war in Kashmir is getting worse every day. Not much information from the outside is getting into the States anymore, but from what does get in it looks there’s going to be nobody left alive in there by the time the shooting stops. Yesterday I heard a guy actually stood in front of an Indian tank and blew himself up....
