``A
more perfect Union!'' ``Na
Brea Aointath'' British Politics in
the 19th century, Schools edition 1970. Gladstone’s success
in passing the Irish home rule bill in 1886 cannot easily be explained.
Once Gladstone started speaking, the Tory and National Liberal opposition
to Irish Home Rule simply seemed to melt away. Some have pointed to
Gladstone’s inspired oratory and leadership, others to skilful work by the RIC
in moving against the Irish militants. Which help bring calm to Ireland. The
fact that Gladstone had watered down the powers of the Dublin parliament to
little more then an advisory body helped win over Conservative opinion in both
Ireland and Britain. That said the passing of the Irish home rule bill is
Gladstones' greatest Political achievement.
It finally brought Ireland Peace. *************** The Irish Times
January 10 1888. Nearly a Hundred
Thousand Dubliners lined Sackville Street, to catch a glimpse of their Monarch
as Ireland Loyally welcomed Queen Victoria today to the state opening of the
Irish parliament. This revived Irish Parliament it is hoped will lead Ireland
into a new era of peace and prosperity with in the British Empire. ************** 20th century Irish
history in focus, 1972 John Redmond’s
appointment to the War cabinet as Minster for Ireland went mostly unnoticed
throughout the War. Redmond managed to secure several concessions from Asquith,
and later Lloyd Georges Government. Redmond skilfully managed to delay the
passing of the conscription act in Ireland until the moment of Crisis in 1918
had passed. In practice the Irish conscripts were never needed. Yet
in return Redmond had managed to win real powers for the Irish parliament for
the first time. ************** St Mary's Mental
Hospital, Queens,New York City. 1920 Eduardo De Valeria is
clearly delusional. He suffers from attacks of nerves. He has an unhealthy
attitude to women. A suppressed Oedipal complex, and a tendency towards
martyrdom. Hopefully he can now get the help he needs. ********************* New York, A
Visitors Guide 1968. Blenlablath, the
place of the flowers, was the residence of Michael Collins during his tenure as
Mayor. It was here that Collins
received Winston Churchill during his visit to the USA in 1941.
Collins mobilised the resources of the City of New York for the allied
war effort long before the US entered the war.
The Son of Irish immigrants Collins worked his way up from poverty to
become leader of the Worlds greatest city. ***************** Court Marshal of
Colonel Thomas Barry Connacht Rangers, 1943. General Perceval was
adamant that we must seek terms with the Japanese. Colonel Barry was arguing
that we could still win. After they went back and forth for a while. General
Perceval in the end insisted that he would order the garrison to surrender. It was then I saw
Colonel Barry take out his side arm and shoot General Perceval. Captain Atwell, Royal
Australian Army ****************** D-DAY a brief
History by C. Nuttall It was only due to a
forced march by the First Donegal, and Tyrone Volunteers, that Caen was taken.
The First Donegal and Tyrone fought hand to hand battles with bayonet, and knife
against strong German defence despite suffering horrific losses. Only a third of
the regiment answered roll call the next day.
Thanks to their Irish troops the Allies took Caen. ******************** The Cork examiner
August 11 1968 Dr Ian Kyle Paisley,
the chairman of the Viewers of Ireland association, had to be escorted out of a
meeting with Dr Connor Cruise O'Brien, the director general of the Irish
broadcasting corporation. Dr Paisley attended the meeting in order to object to
the IBC showing a new production, of the portrait of Dorian Grey.
Dr Ian Paisley is also the founder of the Save Ireland from Sodomy

1980. Pope John Paul 2nd
met Garret Fitzgerald Governor General of Ireland today at Redmond
airport. This is the first visit by a Pope to Ireland.
The pope will meet the leaders of the Churches of Ireland. The Pope is
expected to call for a return to the traditional Christian values of charity and
restraint in a materialistic world. *************** Time
OUT Magazine Belfast 1998 Summer Belfast is the most
cosmopolitan city in Ireland. The
capital of Ulster has an easy going vibe. It’s a place where there is always
time for another pint. Ireland’s second largest city rivals Dublin in terms of
entertainment and culture, but beats it hands down in terms of places to eat.
Whether visiting one of the city’s Indian restaurants, established by Ugandan
Asians fleeing Idi Amin or one of the city’s Bagel shops.
Try the Salmon lox, established by the many Jewish families who settled
in Belfast after World War 2. Or try the local Vodka set up by veterans of the
free Polish Army .Belfast is truly Irelands window on the world. ********** Evening News
January 12 2000 The RIC charged Mr

Gladstone manages to pass the home rule for Ireland act into Law. In
However I have given the Irish a much weaker Parliament. Basically The
Irish do get a Parliament but it has very few powers. However as time goes by
and with the outbreak of war in Europe the Irish are able to bargain for real
authority for their parliament. In this TL Redmond manages to delay the passing
of the Conscription act until the war in Europe is more or less over. Aside from that this is a piece of fun.
The references to Dev, and Michael Collins are intended to be humorous.
In this Timeline Mr’s De Valeria keeps her man, and
Dev ends up enhancing the lives of the people of NYC rather then Dublin.
I don’t know whether it would have
been possible for Collins to have become Mayor of NYC in the 1940’s.
Had the power of the Irish political machines passed? Tom Barry was leader of the IRA’s
West Cork Brigade in the Anglo Irish war. In OTL he defeated Major Perceval
Battalion at Killshanba . Despite being outnumbered 10 to 1. He also
spared Perceval’s life. This would come back to
haunt Perceval after the fall of Singapore. When Barry sent an Insulting
telegram to Perceval. Which enraged Churchill.
What is more interesting about Barry. Is that he
had been a British officer in the 1st world war. He had fought in
Iraq. He appears to have been quite happy in the service of the Crown. In fact
in 1918 it is believed that Barry hoisted the Union flag over Brandon. During
the campaigning over the 1918 election. However
once Barry was released from service he then appears to have joined the Irish
militants, simply because he enjoyed fighting. I have the Irish take Caen on D-Day. Actually
two things the Irish regiments in the British army, were know for was a penchant
for hand to hand warfare, and rapid marches. Both I think would have come in
handy. The First Donegal, and Tyrone volunteers, was a WW1 volunteer regiment. George Best winning the World cup for Ireland.
Is quite likely. In This TL there will be no division of the Irish
football associations. So like in Rugby Ireland will be able to draw it’s most able players. In OTL the one time a United Irish
team did take the field they held the legendary Brazilian team of 1970 No Partition of Ireland. Sectarian violence dies
off. The Southern Unionist stay where they are. Belfast becomes a jewel of the
Atlantic rim. Belfast in this TL, gets more
immigration, some Jews and Poles
after WW2 and the Ugandan Asians. I did realise later that importing large
numbers of Jews and Poles into Belfast, might not be conducive to that fair
city's peace. But I figure the RIC have things locked down by now. RIC still remain Irelands police force. In the end, I find myself drawing the same
conclusion that I came to in the death of Michael Collins. ``That’s
not the way it was, but isn’t that the way it should have been?’’ Rurr,
