Australia is in a state of panic tonight following
unconfirmed accounts claiming that the HRV virus has started to spread beyond

Outbreaks Of Virus Confirmed in San Jose
From the January 3rd, 1996 broadcast of CBC
News at Six:
There seems to be no end in sight for the Haiphong virus
epidemic, which to date has killed 324 people worldwide and infected thousands
of others, and doctors are baffled as the lethal respiratory disease continues
to resist all efforts at finding a cure. The latest chapter in this grim
medical crisis is being played out in North Korea, where at this hour the
Communist regime in Pyongyang is vehemently denying claims that an outbreak of
the virus has happened in a small village just north of the Demilitarized Zone
along the 38th parallel....

In Jakarta, a demonstration held to protest the Suharto
government’s handling of HRV outbreaks in Indonesia turned into a massacre
last night as police opened fire on the demonstrators, killing 28 and wounding
117. Closer to home, the Dow Jones Industrial Average continues to drop as new
cases of the deadly respiratory disease have been confirmed in California and
Arizona; President Clinton is set to make a televised address later tonight to
outline the measures being taken by his administration to halt the spread of
the virus....

From the January 13th, 1996 broadcast of BBC’s
9 O’Clock News:
With over 350 people already dead from the Haiphong
respiratory virus and hundreds more deaths from the virus expected to occur in
the next few months, the news that a second and hardier strain of HRV may be
starting to manifest itself is being greeted with alarm by infectious disease
specialists worldwide. This second strain, identified a few days ago by
doctors at a Tokyo hospital, has a higher survivability than the original type
of HRV and is easier to spread...
From the January 17th, 1996 broadcast of NBC
Nightly News With Tom Brokaw:
The spread of the Haiphong respiratory virus, also known as
HRV or simply "the Haiphong virus", has doctors from every corner of the world
gathering in Stockholm tonight for a medical summit to brainstorm what the
participants hope will be an effective strategy for combating the
dissemination of this exceptionally lethal disease. Stopping the virus is also
a major concern for all the presidential candidates; Republican candidate Bob
Dole, speaking to Iowa voters at a GOP rally in Sioux Falls this afternoon,
pledged that in a Dole Administration finding a cure for HRV would be the
federal government’s top medical priority....

From the February 12th, 1996 broadcast of BBC’s
9 O’Clock News:
What had been suspected by global health officials since
late January has been officially confirmed today by the state-controlled
Xinhua News Agency-- the Haiphong respiratory virus has spread to mainland
China. In a bulletin late this afternoon London time, Xinhua disclosed that at
least twenty Chinese citizens have died from HRV to date; if this figure is
accurate, it would bring the global death toll from the disease up to 450 and
put the world that much closer to seeing the body count reach or exceed 500...

From the February 23rd, 1996 Wall Street
Journal, editorial section:
President Clinton was already facing a tough uphill climb
to begin with in his re-election campaign, but that climb seems to be getting
even tougher as the HRV crisis continues to get worse. His administration,
perceived as ineffectual in its response to the Haiphong virus, is facing
harsher criticism than at any other time during his presidency; a few
political analysts are even starting to suggest Clinton may be the first
incumbent president since Lyndon Johnson not to receive his party’s nomination
for a second term...
