afternoon that there is a possibility the Haiphong virus may reach Britain before the
end of the year....   From the March 8th, 1996 Variety,

HEALTH EMERGENCY DECLARED FOR SOUTHERN WASHINGTON STATE Governor’s office fears HRV may be spreading north from
Oregon   From the March 31st, 1996 broadcast of The
MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour(PBS TV, United States):
President Clinton’s re-election campaign appears to be in
serious jeopardy; not only has Clinton lost three consecutive
primaries, but the latest Gallup polls say that at least 42% of registered
Democrats in the US believe he should resign from office before the
end of his current term. The president, whose critics charge that he
has largely been ineffective in coping with the global HRV crisis, has
repeatedly said in recent weeks that he would not leave office until
his term has expired....   From the April 2nd, 1996 Times of London,

ESTIMATE WORLDWIDE HRV DEATH TOLL NOW STANDS AT 619   From the April 4th, 1996 broadcast of CBC
News at Six:
Medical authorities in Vancouver have directed all of the
city’s hospitals to make a comprehensive review of their HRV screening and
containment procedures as fears mount that the lethal respiratory
disease may reach Canada before the middle of summer. The virus, which to
date has claimed at least 628 lives worldwide, originated in Vietnam last
May and since then has spread across much of Asia as well as infecting people
in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States...   From the April 8th, 1996 broadcast of The
CBS Evening News With Dan Rather:
As Clinton’s re-election campaign teeters on the verge of
final collapse, a possible dark horse contender for the Democratic
presidential nomination is emerging in the person of Vermont governor Howard Dean.
Governor Dean, a former physician who during his tenure has made
health care a major priority of his administration, is the focus of a
grass-roots write-in campaign among voters who feel his medical expertise may
hold the key to containing the spread of HRV in this country. Although
Dean has never before expressed any presidential aspirations, write-in
votes have made him a winner in one state primary and given him second
place finishes in two others and a national ‘Draft Dean’ movement is

Australian Liberal Party leader John Howard is shaken but
unhurt following an incident during a speech in Melbourne earlier today in
which a left-wing demonstrator tried to punch Howard but was stopped and
apprehended by police before she could reach the podium. Howard, a
candidate to become the next prime minister of Australia, has been a controversial
figure in recent months for his numerous public statements advocating the
expulsion of all Asian refugees from the country as a means of halting the
spread of HRV. Viewers may recall that the first outbreaks of the Haiphong

The World Health Organization today issued a report
projecting that the total combined worldwide death toll from the HRV epidemic which
has been going on for nearly a year will reach 750 within the next 24 hours
or less. HRV, also known as "the Haiphong virus" after the Vietnamese port where it
was first identified nearly a year ago, has not only infected much of Asia but
has also made inroads into Australia and New Zealand and spread throughout much
of the west coast of the United States and is even showing faint signs of
threatening war-ravaged Afghanistan...   From the May 6th, 1996 Asahi Shimbun,

agency Doctors Without Borders reports that at least one suspected case of
Haiphong virus has been identified in a remote Afghan village somewhere along
Afghanistan’s frontier with Pakistan....   From the May 16th, 1996 Boston Globe,
front page:
CDC Estimates HRV Worldwide Death Count Now Up to 816   From the May 20th, 1996 broadcast of CBC
News at Six:
One full year has passed since the first outbreaks of HRV
were recorded by the Vietnamese health ministry, and to date there has been
little if any good news in the battle to find treatments for this lethal respiratory
disease. In fact, today on at least one front the news has gotten noticeably worse:
World Health Organization officials have confirmed that not only are the two known
strains of HRV continuing to spread at an alarmingly swift and steady rate, but
doctors in some of the areas affected by the HRV epidemic have found signs of a possible
third strain in existence. With the likelihood of an HRV outbreak in Canada growing
daily, news of a third type of the virus has naturally proven unsettling to
Canadians...   From the May 22nd, 1996 New York Daily News,
